When a person goes through alcohol withdrawal, they may experience something called alcohol tremors, also known as alcohol shakes. Cerebellum and cerebellum-related neural circuits are the most potent common anatomical regions involved in ERMDs, in which GABA pathways, LVA Ca2+ channels, and glutamatergic system play key roles. Promoting the use of these drugs may be a boon to patients, improving their quality of life and extending their lives.

Symptoms of ARBD and ARBI include minor changes in your ability to think or remember things. Continued drinking with ARBD or ARBI puts you at risk for severe brain damage, including dementia. Ethanol is able to antagonize the effect of harmaline through impairment of NMDA-mediated glutamate transmission (91). Downregulation of EAAT2 and AMPAR (92) among chronic alcohol assumption also suggests their possible role for ethanol responsiveness (Figure 3), but more studies are in need for confirm their functions. The intensity of the shaking from essential tremor can be mild to very significant. Also the tremor can vary in location, being most prominent in the hands, head or voice.

Future investigations on this question will be helpful for a better understanding of these diseases and development of optimal pharmacotherapy and neurosurgical intervention for ERMDs. You’ll first need to detox from alcohol altogether in a healthy and effective manner. You should combat alcohol withdrawal in a professional rehab center, as quitting alcohol completely on your own can result in dangerous withdrawal symptoms. Essential tremor is a condition that causes parts of your body, most often your hands and arms, to shake.
Or you might be referred immediately to a doctor trained in brain and nervous system conditions, called a neurologist. Support groups aren’t for everyone, but you might find it helpful to have the encouragement of people who understand what you’re going through. Or see a counselor or social worker who can help you meet the challenges of living with essential tremor. And while experts don’t know exactly why essential tremor happens, they do know that this condition can run in families.

If you opt for outpatient treatment, you’ll likely be given sedative drugs to take at home to ease withdrawal symptoms and have to get routine blood tests to make sure you’re staying on track. You may also need to get tested for other medical problems that could be connected to your alcohol abuse. Moving forward, you may also need to go to patient and family counseling to discuss your alcoholism. These shaky hands from alcohol can be quite debilitating and embarrassing to live with. Doing something simple, like writing or typing, with alcohol tremors becomes a lot more difficult.
